Lloyd Dobson – Artist & Author

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in Independence, I developed a passion for art early in life. My artistic journey began in high school and continued through college, where I was honored with numerous awards and ribbons for my work. During my time in Missouri, I had the privilege of studying under the late artist Andrew Thoman, whose mentorship helped shape my foundation as a painter.
While attending college, I was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and moved to the West Coast to join their rookie training camp. During my second year in the minor leagues, I suffered a severe ankle injury that ended my baseball career. While recovering, I returned to my first love—painting—and studied under California artist Bert Carter. My renewed dedication to art led to participation in numerous exhibitions, where I continued to earn recognition and sell my oil paintings to collectors throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Slovakia, New Zealand, and Switzerland.
After a few years in California, I partnered with three fellow artists to open a gallery in Laguna Beach. That same year, I expanded by opening an additional gallery and studio in Canoga Park, where I also taught oil painting classes.
My inspiration is drawn from the beauty of God’s creations. Many of my paintings begin as watercolor sketches or photographs captured on location before being transformed into finished oil paintings in my studio.
In 2007, I relocated to Treasure Island, Florida, where the vibrant colors and coastal scenery of the Gulf Coast began influencing my work. In 2013, I moved to the Siesta Key–Sarasota area to be closer to my son, daughter in law and granddaughter, whose love and encouragement continue to inspire me.
Today, I am surrounded by the natural splendor of Southwest Florida—its beaches, waterways, and wildlife provide endless creative energy. Whether I’m boating, walking the shoreline, or admiring the sunset, I am continually moved to capture the magnificence of God’s palette on canvas.
In addition to my art, I am also a published author. My books include:
-
Monk’s Steamer Bar: Sarasota’s Hidden Gem in Gulf Gate
-
Dino World: Amazing Dinosaurs for Kids
-
Don’t Feed the Dinosaur Pancakes!
-

-

Through both my paintings and my books, I strive to share the joy, wonder, and beauty that surround us every day—reminding others to see the world as the masterpiece God intended.
